Learning to manage a mental health condition: Caring for the self and ‘normalizing’ identity at work

چکیده
This article examines the internal and external pressures to ‘normalize’ identity in relation individuals experiencing mental health conditions (MHCs) at work. The data takes form of three vignettes extracted from a larger empirical study 60 interviews. These explore tensions surrounding for MHCs as well their interventions suppress exhibiting condition. analysis captures number competing meanings learning care self managing MHCs. Our contribution is relationships between performativity ‘normalizing’ It also provides potential means integrating Foucault’s ethics caring with literature on ways that can be illuminating those who manage demands work through processes ‘normalization’. offers theoretical insights regarding how may self-defeating exacerbating therefore some practical benefit managers, professionals since they often leave little choice but intensify attempts identities.
